“When most people hear “sleeping in a tent” they immediately think of roughing it out in the middle of nowhere with cold water, no electricity, midnight walks to find a bush and a sore back in the morning.
Last week I popped out to Longhill Lodge and Reserve on the R335 near Addo to photograph their two brand-new self-catering luxury tents. What I found was everything but what would be described as “roughing it”.
Each tent boasts a king-sized bed, a twin vanity basin en-suite bathroom with shower, private decking area with dedicated braai facilities (wood and gas-fired braais) and your own wood-fired hot tub too! I can see myself spending a couple nights here to unwind.
You can literally watch the sun go down from your bed. I know cause I was still there as the sun was setting on a perfect day. Even better, I could watch the Njalas come in to the feeding station set up just off the lawn just after sunset.
Longhill also has lodge accommodation and offers both self-catering as well as full board stays. Game drives are done both in Addo and on their own reserve which will soon boast with not only giraffe but also cheetah, buffalo and elephants.
If only I had packed an overnight bag then I could have faked car trouble and stayed over. Instead I had to head home leaving behind the call of the nightjar and jackal.” – Firefly the travel guy
